Surgeons at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Perform County’s First Brain Surgery

Fort Bend County's First Brain Surgery

Surgeons at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital performed Fort Bend County's first brain surgery or craniotomy.

The patient underwent the craniotomy to remove a clot in the brain that put him at risk for stroke. Rajesh Bindal, M.D., neurosurgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital said the procedure was a complete success.

"I'm very excited to be part of the team bringing this level of care to Fort Bend County." Dr. Bindal said. "A procedure this delicate could only be preformed in a facility like Methodist."

In a craniotomy surgery, surgeons remove a portion of the skull to access the brain and remove blood clots and brain tumors, repair aneurysms or stabilize a traumatic injury. A portion of the skull is usually replaced with plates and screws.

Typical symptoms of a blood in the brain include pain in extremities, loss of motor functions, headaches, paralysis, speech difficulty and loss of consciousness.

People who experience these symptoms should immediately call 911. Fast treatment upon onset of symptoms is crucial to prevent long term disabilities.

In the past year, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physicians and surgeons have performed many first for Fort Bend County including abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, angioplasty with stents, carotid artery stenting, gastric lap band surgery, open heart surgery and urinary bladder reconstruction.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital part of The Methodist Hospital System will expand its services to continue to serve the growing Fort Bend community. The current expansion project will initially increase beds from 54 to 243. The hospital will also expand existing services including labor and delivery, critical care, emergency department, surgery, lab and imaging. The expansion is expected to open in October 14.
