Meningioma Tumor Treatment

Meningioma Brain and Spinal Tumor Treatment in Sugar Land, TX

Expert Diagnosis and Neurosurgical Care by Dr. Rajesh Bindal

Meningiomas are typically benign brain tumors that develop from the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. They are the most common type of primary brain tumor, accounting for approximately 15% of all brain tumors. While usually slow-growing and non-cancerous, meningiomas can cause significant neurological symptoms depending on their size and location.

At Texas Spine & Neurosurgery in Sugar Land, TX, Dr. Rajesh Bindal, a board-certified neurosurgeon, offers advanced diagnosis and treatment for patients with meningiomas of the brain and spine.

What Is a Meningioma?

Meningiomas originate from the dura mater, the outermost layer of the meninges. Most grow inward toward the brain as well-defined, spherical or lobulated masses. In rarer cases, en plaque meningiomas spread in a thin layer across the surface of the brain or spinal cord.

Key characteristics:

  • Most are benign (non-cancerous)
  • More common in women than men (2:1 ratio)
  • Risk increases with age, especially in patients over 60
  • Typically attach to the dura and grow slowly

2. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

  • A form of focused radiation used to control tumor growth in small or residual tumors
  • Often used when surgery is not feasible or as a follow-up to partial resection
  • Typically involves a single outpatient session

3. Observation

  • For small, asymptomatic tumors, especially in older patients
  • Involves regular MRI surveillance and monitoring for progression

Note: There is currently no effective chemotherapy for benign meningiomas. Treatment strategies focus on surgical and radiation-based interventions.
